The Cathedral Spires Rise Again: Savannah’s Iconic Skyline Restored

If you’ve walked through Savannah’s Historic District over the past year, you may have noticed something missing from our treasured skyline. The twin spires of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist — one of our city’s most photographed landmarks — had been wrapped in scaffolding, and the familiar sound of the cathedral bells had fallen silent.

Today, that silence has finally lifted.

After more than a year of restoration work nearly 100 feet above the streets of downtown, the Cathedral has unveiled its beautifully renewed spires — and the bells are ringing once again, echoing across the squares and cobblestone streets of Savannah.

Why the Spires Went Silent

Last year, a vigilant church staff member noticed something alarming: the metal superstructure inside the spires was corroding at an accelerated pace. To protect the integrity of the building — a cherished symbol of Savannah’s faith, history, and architecture — the decision was made to halt the bells and begin an extensive restoration.

More than 500 tons of steel rods were removed and replaced to stabilize and preserve the historic structure. What began as a precaution became one of the most significant restoration projects the Cathedral has undertaken in decades.

Lightning Strike Adds Unexpected Urgency

Compounding the structural issues, the Cathedral also suffered from the effects of a lightning strike that further underscored the need for immediate repair. In one incident, lightning hit the steeple of the church, sparking a fire and prompting closer inspection of the spires’ structural steel and metal superstructure.

The strike served as a wake-up call — what may have begun as hidden corrosion suddenly became an urgent matter of safety, leading to the decision to fully scaffold the twin towers and replace critical internal steel members to ensure that the spires would continue to stand tall and the bells could ring safely for years to come.

A Restoration That Reaches to the Sky

West Construction Company led the complex renovation, which required precision, courage, and an unwavering respect for the Cathedral’s sacred history. Crews worked high above the city — carefully navigating narrow walkways, intricate architectural details, and weather challenges — without a single injury throughout the entire process.

The project cost $2.5 million, an investment that ensures the Cathedral’s iconic silhouette — and its beloved bells — will endure for generations.

What This Means for Savannah

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is more than a landmark — it’s a symbol of Savannah’s soul. Visitors from around the world come to marvel at its French Gothic architecture, its twin spires rising proudly above the city, and its serene interior adorned with murals and stained glass.

For locals, it’s part of our everyday rhythm. The sound of the bells marks time, celebrations, holy days, and the heartbeat of our historic streets. With these spires restored and sturdier than ever, Savannah gets back a piece of its living history.

The return of the bells is a reminder of something Savannah does best: preserving the past while protecting the future.

Whether you’re strolling to Forsyth Park, wandering through Lafayette Square, or simply admiring the skyline from Bay Street, look up — the Cathedral spires, strong and restored, are shining over Savannah once again.

And yes… the bells are ringing.
